downtown/ going to

I am honestly.
Okay.

I know stress
is a fucker.

But I am finally
getting back into school
a little bit.

This is what I
want. School,
ambitions, and
just plain
okay
happy,
future creative
ideas I used
to so often
come up with.
May be coming
back. Awesome.

Also, Tegan & Sara’s
new album is plain
amazing.
As well
as the Jealous
material
is just grand.

:)

*title is referencing the song, “downtown”
by who, other than tegan & sara, :)

working/ in design

****************************************************************
I found this on some internets. Repeat, this is not from me, but I am pretty much sure many of my followers are going to enjoy this comparison. And, I think I am getting there, - excited to get the hell out of here. Western, your as stale as that old piece of shit in South Park that talks all the time.

K, enjoy:

Working For Your Studio
Emmi Salonen

Working For My Studio

I Love It
I choose who I work for.
I get all the credit.
I design the layout of the studio.
I organize my day around what I want to/need to do.
If I like you and your work, I can ask you to work with me.
If I don’t like you and/or your work, I can ask you to leave.
I make all the decisions.

I Hate It
I make all the decisions.
When there’s no work, there’s no money.
I stress about projects… and money… and time… and the future.
I have to fix the printer/light bulb/accounts/internet/mistakes…
Nobody covers me on my holidays. Do I get a holiday?
I’m not getting enough feedback. Am I evolving as a designer?
I can’t switch off.

Working For Their Studio

I Love It
I get paid every month.
I get paid when I’m ill.
They’ve got all the responsibility.
They have a cleaning person/accountant/IT guy…
When there’s no work, there’s no worries.
They have a lovely studio and they are lovely people.
I learn from them.

I Hate It
I stress about the projects.
They get all the credit.
I have to work with whoever they hire.
They manage my time.
They make the final decisions on my design.
They choose the clients.
I think I could do better if I had my own studio.

What a waste of my time

c4jones2:

I work an 8 hour day only to listen to a bunch of nothing for three hours. To top it off there was only pop again, so needing fluids after working all day and just eating pizza I decide to break down and spend a buck 25 for a water… but the damn machine is broken. Needless to say I was pissed and it was my breaking point, which lead to me literately kicking the shit out of the machine until my money came pouring out of the bottom. Take that bitches, I made 40 cents today.

What pisses me off most is that I have 3 weeks to make a portfolio, and this stupid “leave behind.” All of this to do on top of thesis, intern and of course, actually looking for a job. Not applying though, I would need portfolio for that. The program has some serious priority issues. I’m glad I walked out. I’ve got better things to do with my time.

I couldn’t agree more.

selling out/ what is/ what was → blog.iso50.com

This is a blog by the designer, Scott Hansen. I’ve been following him for some time now, but I really, really agree with the concept of “selling out” - music-wise, in this one post.

“… Mr. Herren has reached a great level in music making which is instead of selling out and going the Steve Aoki celebrity DJ route and writing ringtone rap like some other fading stars that i follow on twitter. Herren sounds like he got to a point where he could really push his sound past glitch hop and more into sampling live instruments in the studio which should be every musicians dream but it isn’t anymore.”

- UGH, right now, right now! I know musicians need to make money, but I hate the concept of money even effecting the music. The same goes for art. Thinking about money in reference to pure abstract art should not be a consideration. Well, this subject is even touchy with me, since graphic design is alot of selling… well, I’ll end this before I contradict own opinions.

Theatre photo-shoot later today, I am so nervous.

“[ 8:42 A.M.] - Hello, good morning, can everybody hear me?” —

- Bruce Naftel.

(another reason why this program disappoints me, hmm, class started at 8:00am) And now next week we are meeting with Bruce to talk about our thesis. I can’t stand this, I don’t need anymore direction, maybe I do, but I don’t care anymore. We have a portfolio to fork out in three weeks, thesis is the least of my f*cking worries. I’d rather work, yes “work” in class than feedback all the time.

f*bomberoo

This school/ program is seriously flawed. Fuck, how can this be a good program. College = getting a g*d-dam* job. How do we get a job in the design field? Oh, I don’t know, a f*cking portfolio! Last year, last semester, only a month left of school, and are we focusing on our portfolio yet?

Umm, no. I am honestly don’t care anymore about Intern, thesis, or any other bull in this program. We should have our portfolios done right now. Printed, finalized and done. Therefore we could not only be actually “applying” for jobs, RIGHT NOW, but hey, our program could be “useful” and actually help us apply too.

But no, its smarter to push the most important thing from f*cking college right down to f*cking minute. Sorry about the amount of F-Bombs I am dropping in this post, but its a necessity. This program is just outright a lie, and a fantasy-land to the professors. They just automatically think its a great program, without even questioning the idea that it could be a thousand times better.

Well, I think the structure of our last year is an true punch to the face. We pay alot of money to go here, time and oh ya alot of time spend in this program. How are we repaid? - by being stressed, since we cram the most important aspect of getting a job to the literal last minute basis. How could this slip past the professors? Easy, since they are in the mindset that this is a gold-mine for us, students. How about asking us about the program - feedback to make it better. Na.

Anywho, I am really upset over this issue. Portfolio = job. Job = money. And we all NEED money. Not want, need. We are all in debt from college loans and low-paying part times jobs. And if our portfolio reflect the amount of time, our program gives us to work on them, then we are all screwed. Our portfolios should not be under-estimated at all. I have a son, and a portfolio is not only my future, but also his. Me getting a good job means my son getting a better life, or a normal one. Having a baby instantly makes my life about money, since I don’t lie to myself about how its going to be every year he grows older. Kids cost some mula ya know.

I just wish this program gets a f*cking wake up call, since how you structure the program does have real-time effects on people’s lives. It does. This last year is absolute largest flaw in this program. Stop being elite about the program, and start being open - seriously. - the professors really need to start thinking like this, if this program is really going to make a difference in design education. Anywho, take it as you will, later.

“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” —

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

(I don’t really agree with the quote, I am only posting it, since I miss the random emails from our old professor, Pravin Sevak. This was one of his older emails I found that I still had in my inbox from some time ago.)
